Reduction of FeO in Molten Slag by Solid Carbonaceous Materials for HIsarna Alternative Ironmaking Process

Abstract To investigate the use of biomass in novel HIsarna technology, reduction FeO slag by chars produced from thermal coal (TC), charcoal (CC), and Bana grass char (BGC) was studied. A drop tube furnace coupled with a quadrupole mass spectrometer (DTF-QMS) employed to study injection into pre-melted temperature range between 1450 °C 1525 °C. The rate calculated evolved gases extent confirmed wavelength-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WDXRF). proceeds through two stages, starting rapid reduction, which is dependent on carbon type, followed gradual leveling off. (CC) highest, over 60 pct achieved first 500 seconds at 1500 °C, while ~ 50 40 TC BGC chars, respectively, for same reaction time. kinetic analysis suggests that second stages can be described second-order (F2) three-dimensional diffusion (D3) models, respectively. apparent activation energy values stage were 290, 229 267 kJ/mol reactions TC, CC 265, 369, 282 obtained stage. Based experimental data results, it concluded controlled chemical surface, influenced mixed-controlling mechanism.
